Today is the Melbourne Cup, the race that stops a nation. At about 3pm, pretty well the entire nation drops whatever they are doing and tuned into the telly or the radio to listen in to see who wins the Cup. Australians all around the world will do the same. Even as far back as the First World War, the first Tuesday in November would see Diggers trying to find any way possible to listen in to the Melbourne Cup.

It stops the nation, so for today, it will also stop School Spirit. The current storyline will continue next time!

This year sees the 150th running of the Cup, a major miletstone. It is apparently the oldest continuing horse race in the world; older than the Kentucky Derby, and older even than the nation of Australia itself.

If there’s one thing Australia seems to know how to do well, it’s a sporting event!

(Don’t forget to check back a strip or two – you might have missed the last one, they were uploaded a little later than normal.)
