The first Sunday in March has, for about 20 years now, been Clean Up Australia Day. Get outside, find some side of the highway or some public park, or even the supermarket carpark, and clean up any of the mess you find lying around. Usually there’s something planned nearby by the officials trying to get their faces on the telly, but you could usually wander down anywhere and clean the joint up a bit.

If you chose not to, it’s just another Sunday.

Often schools would have a Clean Up Australia Day the Friday before, or maybe the day after, and give their surrounding areas a good scrub with a bit of spit and chicken fat. Make the place nice and clean before they messed it up with rotten apples and chip wrappers the next school day.
