No, this song about a returning Vietnam Veteran to Australia is not actually our national anthem, although it is arguably one of Australia’s greatest rock songs. It was actually banned from airplay over the radio when it was released in the late 70s. Telling Australians they can’t do something sort of works in reverse, so obviously it became a massive hit. In fact, if any cover band worth their salt wants a five minute break, they just have to play the first piano bars of this song and can sit back and have a beer while the pub audience sings the entire song without them.
