A sad day for Australia two nights ago, with the passing of Nancy Wake, the White Mouse, at the age of 98 in England. While born in New Zealand, she lived in Sydney from the age of two until 16 when she made her way to Europe, just as Europe was sliding towards World War II. Married to a Frenchman who became a member of the Resistance against the Nazis, Nancy Wake became the Nazis’ most wanted enemy through her efforts with the Resistance. Two nights ago Australia lost one of its most decorated characters from a quiet, relatively unremembered story that would make any movie sound implausible.

If you want a more detailed account of her actions through the darkest years of World War II, read her Wikipedia entry.

Hers is a fantastic story, all the more amazing because it was true. Not bad for a young lass from the bottom corner of the world, eh?
