It almost looks like Hansel has run out of pebbles to find his way home and resorted to whatever clothing he has left to leave a trail to find his way home again.
While this is an exaggeration, it’s not TOO far from reality. We’ve all walked the school yard at times following trails of discarded clothes from time to time. And if we haven’t yet, we will before too long. They leave clothes everywhere! Sometimes you wonder how they got home when you find a pair of pants after school in the corridor…

♫ Oh yes they call him the Streak! ♫
♫ He likes to show off his physique… ♫
Hahaha! I haven’t heard that song for donkey’s years!
Any wagers on who it is? (The strip is already drawn, so I can’t cheat now!)
Well, if time has passed since the boys got cornered, then I would guess Cody.
Since we’ve seen Casper, Cody, Davey and Brylcreem, I’m thinking it’s Jacks, showing off how much tougher he is than the older boys.
I was thinking more Didj. The aborigines lived through weather of all sorts for thousands of years, yet it seems they never wore much clothing other than cloaks made of possum or kangaroo skins in the cooler areas.
Hmm. You’re familiar with my practice of trying to include every kid into storylines from time to time, it seems. We’ll see who’s right on Sunday.
Keep in mind though that both of those options were up for consideration, for just those reasons!
Now, Mr. V – if you REALLY want to mess with everybody, make it Chastity! :-D
Oh dear… No. I don’t think I could even morally contemplate drawing something like that! Besides, I’ve already drawn the tie in this strip. That makes it a boy, eh?
Would have been damn funny though! :D
Are you saying that girls can’t wear ties? :P
No, I’m saying that they shouldn’t. :P
Actually, that will get me into more trouble, won’t it? :D
I agree that girls shouldn’t have to wear ties. I had to wear a tie at my elementary school as part of the dress code for a few years and I didn’t like it. I wore a clip on bow tie because I didn’t want to tie my tie. I also refused to wear one on picture day. I thought it was weird having both girls and boys wearing a tie. The principal wanted everything to be uniform.
The kids’ uniform is one thing I occasionally wish I hadn’t run with, actually. Shirts and ties are very private school out here, particularly out of the metropolitan cities and suburbs. These kids are definitely public school, but, oh well. Too late to change the uniform from shirts to polo shirts, eh?
Not necessarily. The Principal/PTA (or whatever they call it in Australia) could decide to modernize the uniform; either give the kids 2 sets of the new uniform, or allow the kids to keep wearing the old one if their parents can’t afford/don’t want to buy the new uniform.
I can understand that reasoning. Although I am not, by any stretch, of a “women should only wear nice dresses and nothing else” I will say openly that there was always something odd about a woman/girl wearing a tie. It may not be PC, but it is true.
In your case, Mr. V you’re covered by two things – dress code of the school, and the fact that it’s YOUR STRIP. :)
Besides – if you drew Chastity in some sort of long underwear/chemise, or even did the obligatory “You can only see her head and shoulders above the bushes” shot, there’d be nothing immoral about it.
No, that’s correct. Dress code says it’s a boy because of the tie, and I’m covered from the ‘girls wear dresses’ stuff because Chastity wears pants as a minor little stance against the institution, even though she wouldn’t know what that meant.
But she isn’t the one hiding behind bushes and running around in the nuddy, because we all know that’s just not Chastity, eh?
Now, give her a two piece and a pool side and that’s another story!
Boys shouldn’t have to wear ties, either. It’s a symbol of man’s enslavement to corporations. We shouldn’t be enslaving the boys so young. Besides, not everyone is comfortable with something constrictive around their neck.
With all due respect – the only reference I could find to support your point was:
“Neckties are viewed by various sub- and counter-culture movements as being a symbol of submission and slavery (i.e. having a symbolic chain around one’s neck) to the corrupt elite of society, as a “wage slave”.”
Neckties and their variations have a long and varied history, dating back to Croation Mercenaries in the late 1600′s and even before. At the risk of starting a debate, I’ll go with their history rather than what some “say” they mean. “Enslaving boys so young” is just a little melodramatic, IMO.
Don’t worry about starting any debates… this is the longest commentary thread in the entire history of School Spirit – and I find it hilarious that it’s all about the school clothes the kids are wearing! :)
I’ve had a think about this thread though. The idea of changing the uniform could lend itself quite well to a longer storyline of it’s very own. I can imagine the Girls getting political and starting a movement to get ‘cooler’ uniforms or something. It’s something I’ll stir over in the back of my head for a while, because while the shirts and ties remind me more of private schooling (which their school clearly isn’t), the shirt and tie are so easy to draw for me now! :D
Such a balancing act! :)
Carry on! This is entertaining!
I wouldn’t change the strip, Mr. V. In all honesty, if the kids in your school (or in the strip) wear uniforms, then they wear uniforms. It’s a COMIC STRIP, for the love of God. Leave it alone and let it be enjoyable – not a reason for some cockamamie debate over what the ties REALLY mean.
Nah, there’s really not much chance of that happening. As I said, the shirts and ties are part of the school and are easy to draw now. If I had thought longer about it right from the start, they would have been in polo shirt uniforms like most primary schools around here are, that’s all. I like polo shirts. :)
Actually, they’re just about the only shirts I wear! :D
Polo shirts are fine for work. But at school, I always wore T-shirts and jeans. No ties for me! (17th-century Croatian mercenaries can do what they want; I make my own history!)
Haha! That’s the way! It’s only history, eh? Gawd, I’ve enjoyed this conversation! :D
