Didj gets a chance to show his batting talent a little here, playing for the grade 3/4s against the big kids. A nice hook shot around over forward square leg. Looks like it still had some go in it as it passed Wendy… er, Grace… er… the girls… in the outfield.
Hands up if you understood any of that.

(laughing hard)
Wendy meets the forces of PC!
“You can’t say stuff like that now!” Chances are good she’d have probably said something worse, in actuality, if this wasn’t a family friendly cartoon :-D
Oh, it wouldn’t have been malicious or anything, but no, the words she would have used back in the 30s would probably be frowned upon now. And probably not the word some of you would think. We had our own. :)
Oh no doubt :) I just found it funny and VERY true to life – it would be kind of silly for her to sound like all the other kids if she’s been dead since the 30′s.
“A nice hook shot around over forward square leg. ”
To us non-fans, this is referentially opaque. IOW, HUNH?
Okay… hook – when you hit the ball back around over your shoulder, usually high. If you can keep it low and along the ground it’s usually called a sweep.
Square leg – the fielding position on the leg side of the pitch, directly level with where the batsman is standing. Forward square leg, therefore, is a little forward of this line than regular square leg.
See? Clear as mud! We won’t go into fielding positions like silly mid on, deep third man or gully just yet though.
Actually, even mud is clearer.
But thanx for trying.
