Before you ask… surely if the Soldier has been hanging around the cemetery next door to the school for so long he and Old Bill would have gotten to know the various people wandering around, even if they could never interact. So there. That’s how he knows who Mavis is.
Maybe the soldier was driven to school by Mavis. Who knows how old she is?
